Skincare. I think most of us know by now that some sort of skincare routine is essential to keep your skin looking the best it can. But how do you know what to use? There are so many things to choose from and unless you're reasonably clued up on how skincare ingredients work and more importantly what it is your skin needs, it can be quite overwhelming. Sure, you can go visit a beauty therapist who can analyse your skin. But what if there was a simple test you could do from the comfort of your own home that analyses your skin and gives you tailored recommendations on what products to use in just 20 minutes? Hard to believe right? In this post I am reviewing the Hauto Self Skin Test. Is it all that it promises? Read on and find out.

What is the Hauto Skin Test?

The Hauto Skin Test is the world's first self skin test with on-demand access to skincare advisors. It claims to reveal skin cell activity, hidden UV and pollution damage, irritation, dryness and based on the test results, it suggests bespoke evidence based skincare.

How does the Hauto Skin Test work?

When you get the test, it comes in two parts: the swab and the cassette. The swab is rubbed across the cheek and is inserted into the cassette after which you press the button on the cassette to start the test. Through the Hauto app on your mobile phone, a 20 minute timer will start after which you can scan the test and read the results.

After the test results are uploaded onto the app, the in-app chat helps pick the best performing skincare products and treatments for your skin.

What is the science behind the Hauto Skin Test?

I'm going to try and explain this hopefully without being too scientific! What the test does is measure levels of certain proteins in your skin. These levels can indicate 1 of 5 outcomes:

• Skin actively responding to stress
• Active skin but not responding to stress
• Inactive skin
• Skin that is active and overresponding to stress
• Skin with signs of irritation

Through the Hauto app, your test result is combined with personal user input. The app will ask you a few questions to find out what kind of environment you live in (i.e. humidity, hot/cold climate, exposure to UV etc.). This will then produce the in-depth analysis. The Hauto Skin Test is suitable for all skin types, but not suitable to use on skin with a medical condition or skin that has recently had an acid peel, laser treatment or sunburn. The test evaluates three types of cytokines in your skin which are secrete proteins and through this it gauges your skin's ability to renew itself.

My experience with the Hauto Skin Test

I found that the Hauto Skin Test uses two apps: The main app in which I created my personal profile and where I could chat to a specialist and the app for the actual skin test. My immediate thoughts were that it would have been easier to have all the options available in one app rather than switching between the two.

The skin test itself was very easy to use. The process is explained in the booklet that comes with the test and in the app, so as long as I followed the steps the whole thing was pretty fool-proof. The swab moved easily across my cheek and it was easy to push the swab into the cassette and press the button to start the development of the test. The test took 20 minutes to develop and it kind of made me feel like I was waiting for my pregnancy test to give me those stripes! I found the fact that the app comes with a timer very useful in case I got distracted.

While I was waiting for the test to develop, I was taken to a set of questions that allowed me to give the app some personal info about my skin, living conditions, skincare routines and skin concerns. These questions were then taken into account together with the test result which I found very useful because I felt that this way the results were more personal and bespoke.

The Results

Hauto_SkinTest_Result

The results of the Hauto Skin Test are broken up in four sections:

• Skin Moisture Level
• Skin Cell Activity
• Sun and Pollution Exposure
• Irritation

The app shows the results in circles with percentages. By clicking on each of the circles, the app displays further in-depth information on what the percentages mean and what you can do to improve your skin. This information is based on the results of the swab together with the answers you provide to the questions that were asked about living conditions, skincare routines etc.

I found the information easy to understand and very useful in terms of figuring out what is useful to have as part of my skincare routine. The information provided in the results gives an idea of what it is you might be looking for (i.e. a gel based moisturiser rather than a rich, creamy one, or the idea of adding an acid peel to your routine once a week). What I love about Hauto, is that you can then take that information and chat to one of the advisors who will recommend specific products.

Initially most of the products that were advised to me were quite high end but you can actually let the person you chat to know whether you are looking for skincare on a low budget or on a high budget and they will amend their advice based on that so there is really something for everyone.

Now I won't put all my results on here, but I do want to share a little video of one of the results so that you have an idea of what it looks like.

Final Thoughts

I really enjoyed using the Hauto Self Skin Test. It gave me a useful insight into the condition of my skin and it gave me some nice ideas of products I could try in the future. Perfect for anyone who is curious about their skin, looking for new products to add to their skincare routine and great if you don't have access to a beauty therapist.

Please note however that this test does just that, give you an idea of products you could use, based on the information you feed into the app about your skin. It is only as accurate as the information you put in and will provide you with different results if you for instance class your skin as normal rather than combination, so you do need to know some basic information about your skin.

It is by no means a way to solve/cure any specific skin concerns and I would always advise you to seek advice from a qualified dermatologist if you have any specific skin concerns. Please do not solely rely on this test, but rather see it as an addition instead.

**I am no skincare expert. All thoughts and opinions are through my own  personal experience with the Hauto Self Skin Test.**
