Why Sugaring At Home Is Better Than Waxing

Oh hello there! I am finally treating you to the first blog post of 2020. It's about time, isn't it? Now before I fill you in on my 2019 beauty faves (I like to reflect in January), I wanted to share something else with you first. Something I've never really posted about before. I bet you're asking yourself what it could be, but it's probably nowhere near as interesting or exciting as what you are imagining right now! For me, the start of 2020 was marked as 'overcoming your fears', so I decided to take the plunge and sugar my armpits! What a weird thing to say, but let me explain.

When it comes to hair removal, I am all about waxing my legs. A few years ago, I decided to try and wax my armpits because otherwise you keep shaving every other day and it leaves that dark area that doesn't look nice etc. But boy, bad idea!! Oh my goodness, it was so painful and my skin was so red and almost bruised after that, that I didn't ever dare doing it again. Even the thought of it alone scared me, but then I learned about sugaring and decided to give it a go. But what is sugaring? Read all about it in this post and find out how I got on.

What is sugaring and how is it different from waxing?

So let's start at the beginning by explaining what sugaring is. Sugaring is a hair removal method whereby a sugar paste is used to which the hair sticks and hair is effectively pulled out of the skin. In principle, it works pretty much the same way as waxing. You apply the paste, put a cloth over it and pull it off like a plaster, removing the hairs in the process. There are sugar pastes that work without needing cloths to pull it off as well.

The difference lies in the paste itself. Waxing is done with a resin like wax made from for instance beeswax. The wax used for waxing, sticks to both hair and skin and actually pulls the skin up when removed, thus making it a more painful experience. Any wax residue has to be removed using a cleanser or oil. Sugaring on the other hand is done with a paste traditionally made from sugar, water and lemon juice. Sugar paste can be removed with water and does not stick to the skin, which is often experienced as less painful and causes less irritation. Sugar pastes are also 100% natural and suitable for vegans.

Meet Sugar Coated

The sugar paste I have used for this review comes from a British brand called Sugar Coated, created by Rosie Khandwala. Rosie grew up in Tanzania where sugaring was THE way to remove hair and was taught how to sugar by her mother and older sisters. When Rosie moved to the UK, she realised sugaring was not a thing and decided to create a UK sugar paste. She removed lemon juice out of the traditional recipe as the acidity can cause irritation and after years of collaborating with The Body Shop, Rosie created her own brand Sugar Coated.

Sugar Coated offers a variety of sugar waxes such as a full body wax, a leg wax and one specifically for the underarm area. They are all 100% natural, vegan and cruelty free. The packaging is completely recyclable and each box contains a 200g pot of wax, 15 reusable strips and three spatulas to apply the wax. The wax for the underarm area is made of sugar, water and lemongrass oil. The lemongrass oil has been added to give the underarm area a subtle fresh scent, but also because of its antibacterial properties.

My Sugar Coated experience

To make sure I got the most out of this experience, I followed the instructions to a T. For a full pot of paste this meant warming it in the microwave for 40 seconds at 900W until it had the consistency of runny honey, applying talc powder to my armpits to eliminate any moisture and then applying a thin layer of sugar paste. I found getting the wax to the correct temperature a little tricky. 40 Seconds in my microwave turned out to be too long and it was hard to check the temperature without almost burning myself.

Applying a thin layer was very easy with the spatulas provided but it can be a little messy. It is a sticky paste after all. After applying I found that you need to apply and remove the strip quickly before the paste gets too cool. Now I am not going to tell you that removing the strip does not hurt. I could definitely feel it at the time, but the sensitive feeling eases very quickly. Apart from a little temporary redness, I did not experience any discomfort afterwards.

I found that sugaring with Sugar Coated removes hair really well, but the shape of my armpits did make it a little harder to remove all the hairs. Please note that this was only my first experience with sugaring and that practice probably makes the whole process a lot easier.

Final Thoughts

Even though I have been so scared to try it, I am very glad I tried Sugar Coated. It was definitely a much nicer experience than I had with wax. The sugar paste was easy to use and very effective. It does exactly what it's supposed to do. I like that the sugar paste was specifically designed for the underarm area, leaving a nice scent because of the added Lemongrass oil.

Would I use it again? Yes, I am going to try to be brave enough to use it again! Although shaving is so much easier and pain free, the hairs stay away significantly longer with sugaring and I felt that they came back softer. I am also interested in seeing whether the dark area that you are left with when shaving will become less over time, because that's one of the reasons I wanted to try this out. I'll keep you updated!

If you are a fan of waxing or sugaring the underarm area, I would definitely recommend using Sugar Coated sugar paste; it's affordable and so effective and easy to use.

Have you tried sugaring at home? I would love to hear more about your experience, so feel free to share by leaving a comment.

I hope you have found this useful and as always thank you for reading.
