When you hear the word 'Dyson', the first thing that comes up in our heads usually tends to be a vacuum cleaner or one of those hand dryers you see in the toilets. That was definitely what I was thinking (I see those silver-grey hand dryers on a daily basis at my office). Did I know Dyson have since then created a hairdryer? I kind of did, but to be honest I never allowed myself to think about it too much as they sell at £300 a piece! That is a steep price to pay, especially as the average amount we spend on a hairdryer is just over £25. (To give you an idea: I bought my hairdryer for £4.99!)
To be able to justify asking for such an amount of money, there has to be more to it than just the brand name right?! Well, when I got the invitation from Kevin Urquhart of Fraser Urquhart Media to come celebrate Dyson Supersonic's first birthday, I knew this would be the perfect chance to find out! Now, I am no expert by any means but let me share some info with you through this blog post.
At the event, a glass of champagne came to me upon entering the room - score! There was also an amazing tray full of cupcakes made by The Blonde Bakery. I can tell you, those were super delicious! Next to the star of the event, the Dyson Supersonic, I was pampered with a lipstick makeover by Dior, and luxury hand massages by La Prairie and Aveda.
But let's get back to what this post is all about! Dyson stylists Tracie Bedwood, Gabi Kaur and Nasim Sadigh offered an in-depth presentation about the technology behind the Dyson Supersonic, and I want to share a few little facts with you below:
- It took developers 5 years, a £58 million investment, 600 prototypes and 103 engineers before the Supersonic was created.
- The Dyson Supersonic works with Intelligent Heat Control, whereby the air running through the hairdryer is tested 20 times per second to ensure that your hairdryer stays at the temperature you set it at. There are four temperature settings: 28, 60, 80 and 100 degrees.
- The Dyson Supersonic contains a V9 motor with Air Multiplier Technology, which draws in 13 litres of air per second which is then multiplied by 3 producing 41 litres per second! This is meant to dry the hair faster, whilst making the hair smoother, straighter and shinier.
- The motor of the hairdryer sits in the handle rather than the top of the dryer. This makes it a lot easier to hold, without making your arm ache.
- The motor is encased in rubber casing, preventing the motor from vibrating against the handle, making it a lot quieter.
Now you might think that right now I look like a sales person for Dyson, listing all the wonderful things about the Supersonic, but I am definitely not! What I can tell you however, is that I have tried the Dyson Supersonic myself and to be very honest with you, even though it sounds like a sales pitch, the things listed above are actually true. From experience, I believe that the Dyson Supersonic is powerful, easy to hold, silent compared to other hairdryers and leaves hair feeling soft.
As with the vacuum cleaners and hand dryers, Dyson is pretty unique in what it has to offer, and the technology is amazing. The thing I personally love most about the hairdryer (apart from the fact that it comes in white with silver! *drool*), is that it uses the air flow, rather than temperature, to dry the hair. I have really fine hair and I have to be so careful not to burn my hair when using a hairdryer! I can't use my normal hairdryer on a cool temperature because it won't dry my hair at all. The Supersonic has such a powerful airflow, that it pretty much blows the water off your hair!
I am pretty amazed by the Dyson Supersonic. I really think there is nothing quite like it, and I would love to get one, especially now that I know so much more about it. So why am I not running to the shop right now? Well, A. the shops are closed as I am writing this, and B. there is no way I can justify spending that much money on a hairdryer, as much as I would love to! But I will continue to dream... one day!
